Kyle Torres-Hiyoshi

This is Kyle Torres-Hiyoshi’s second season with Texas Ballet Theater. Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Mr. Hiyoshi started ballet training at the American Academy of Ballet. At fifteen, he left to study and continue his dance education at The School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center after being offered a full scholarship. He continued his dancing with ABT’s Studio Company as well as Boston Ballet II. Mr. Hiyoshi then joined Sarasota Ballet form 2014 to 2017, where he danced titled roles in George Balanchine’s Rubies and Diamonds, Sir Frederick Ashton’s Sinfonietta, Valse Nobles et Sentimentales, Scene de Ballet, and Anthony Tudor’s Continuo. His favorite ballets include Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, Jiří Kylián’s Wings of Wax, and Alexander Ekman’s Cacti.

Where are you from?
I was originally born in Pullman, Washington, however I grew up in Buffalo, New York.

When did you begin dancing?
At age 5 at the American Academy of Ballet

Why did you begin dancing?
I watched a performance of The Nutcracker and fell in love with performing and dancing!

When did you join Texas Ballet Theater?
This is my second season and thrilled to be part of such an inspiring group of dancers!

What is your favorite ballet to see?
Jiří Kylián’s Wings of Wax absolutely blew me away when I first saw it. Another one I love watching is Paul Taylor’s Company B.

What is your favorite ballet to perform/what is your favorite role you have performed?
I had a chance to perform El Captain from Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes and fell in love with the bravura and confidence you feel when dancing the role. I loved performing Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto.

What surprised you the most about being a professional dancer?
The number of ballets that exist! I was the only boy from a small ballet studio and had no idea what else ballet had in store for any professional dancer. It was only when I got the chance to move to other cities and discover all these marvelous ballet’s in every style and story that had been created. My passion for ballet always reignites, wishing to be able to perform as many pieces and variety of dance as possible.

What profession other than your would you like to attempt?
I am very interested in human biology and epidemiology. Also, I’d like to write fortunes for fortune cookies (yes that’s a real job). Walls are there for you to overcome.

What outdoor activities do you enjoy?
I love kayaking and swimming on beaches. I’d love to travel the world someday.

Do you have a favorite sports team? If so, who?
Embarrassingly, I do not follow sports that often to have a favorite team.

What kind of music do you like best?
I play the violin so I love classical music, but because I can speak Japanese, I love listening to Japanese music as well. All in all, I’m very open to listening and trying out any type of music!
