The Trainee Program provides essential work and performing experience to help bridge the gap from the studio to the stage. Trainees perform with the company in all major productions, as well as in smaller works as they are chosen.
Trainees are selected by Artistic Director Ben Stevenson and the Artistic Staff from the National Audition Tour and from Texas Ballet Theater School Summer Intensive. Interested dancers are highly encouraged to attend the Summer Intensive to increase their chances of being selected for the Trainee program. Trainees range in age from 15 to 21 and receive a stipend to work with the company as well as a full scholarship to train with the school.
Each morning, the Trainees take technique class followed by rehearsals for upcoming performances. In the evenings and on weekends, Trainees take classes with the school including ballet technique, pointe, jazz and modern dance. This program offers many learning opportunities to work with the company and see how the professionals deal with the different pressures of a performing career. At the same time, the trainees are working in a school environment where there is more nurturing and assistance with technical skills so that they may secure a job in the performing field.
TBT II was introduced in 2012 to give the Trainees and Apprentices a greater chance to perform leading roles in various venues throughout Dallas and Fort Worth. The year culminates with the School's Spring Performance which features trainees in classical repertoire and original choreography.
Since 2007, nearly 60% of the Trainees have received contracts from TBT. Others have gone on to careers on Broadway, Connecticut Ballet, Utah Regional Ballet, Eugene Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Coastal City Ballet and college.
