T exas Ballet Theater School’s Summer Intensive (June 23-July 26) is designed to broaden the perspective of serious ballet students ages 12-21 by cultivating performance-based artistry through training in a wide variety of disciplines. Under the supervision of Texas Ballet Theater’s Artistic Director, Ben Stevenson, O.B.E, the program’s distinguished faculty and guest teachers are dedicated to the learning process and growth of each student. The experience is enhanced by emphasizing not only technique, but also the artistic expression and musicality necessary to prepare well-rounded, classically trained dancers for a company career.
“During my years as Artistic Director, I have found the summer school exceedingly valuable for the development of the Company. Many soloist and principal dancers, past and present, have come up through our summer schools. I firmly believe that enjoying and loving what you do is of the upmost importance in any career. That’s why it’s so reassuring when I hear over and over from students and their parents how much they enjoyed our summer program and learned from it.” - Ben Stevenson O.B.E., Artistic Director
T he schedule includes ballet technique, pointe, men’s class, variations, and jazz. Both a 3 week and 5 week program is offered and may include additional classes in pas de deux, character, modern, Pilates mat and Latin ballroom. Classes are taught by the Texas Ballet Theater Artistic Staff, Texas Ballet Theater School Faculty and esteemed guest teachers from around the world. All students attending the 5 week intensive are included in the Showcase Performance.
Students are invited to attend Texas Ballet Theater’s School Summer Intensive by audition only. A national audition tour to select cities takes place in January and February. DVD or YouTube auditions are available for students unable to reach an audition site. The deadline to submit DVD auditions is March 30.
T exas Ballet Theater's Summer Intensive offers aspiring, qualified students with an opportunity to advance their ballet education through the possibility of being asked to stay the year as a trainee or apprentice with the company. Each year, students participating in the five-week program are considered for TBT's second company, as well as the Trainee and Apprentice programs, entry points to a professional career. Alumni have joined TBT, San Francisco Ballet, Eugene Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Coastal City Ballet and Ballet Dortmund in Germany.
Limited scholarships are awarded at the sole discretion of Texas Ballet Theater Artistic Staff and the School. All students are considered for merit-based scholarships and there is no application process. TBTS will notify scholarship recipients at the time of acceptance. Students must attend an audition to be eligible for scholarship consideration.
“My daughter was challenged and stretched, forced to dance outside of her ‘ballet box’ with classes such as Broadway, Latin, Character, Mime and even Acting. I believe this developed her as a dancer, boosted her confidence, and made her more of a performer.” - 2013 Senior Intensive Parent
